It's perhaps going to be something of a 3-way tie at the
top, with American Made, Kingsman: The Golden Circle & It all making around
$16.5 million for the Fri-Sun frame.
Even if American Made takes the top spot, it is not the
world's greatest opening weekend even for a fairly cheap,
non-sequel/action/sci-fi Tom
Cruise movie.
American Made is both the kind of movie that defined movie prominence
in the 1980's & 1990's plus the kind of movie that is in short supply &
a challenging sell in 2017.
Even with mostly encouraging reviews, we are still looking
at a $6.06 million Friday & a likely $16.6m opening weekend.
Universal, which did not produce the movie & is
distributing it everywhere excluding China, is hoping for legs closer to Edge
of Tomorrow or Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation than Oblivion, The Mummy &
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
Presuming a $16m debut for American Made, a 3.4x gets the
movie to $55m whilst a 2.6x gets it to $42m. The competition will be atrocious
thanks to the inundation of R-rated, adult-skewing genre offerings.
As somebody who likes to see Cruise making more movies like
American Made & less like The Mummy, my fingers are crossed.
